Hulking and Wiccan, Marvel’s LGBT couple.

In the first few episodes of Marvels Young Avenger’s, speculation arose around Hulking and Wiccan’s relationship. Flirting was obvious and the hints were there. In terms of the fandom the couple were already canon gay. Then in issue #12 their relationship was revealed.

Following this relation both sides of the debate joined in. Many were for the inclusion of an LGBT relationship while many were not. The comic showed the tender relationship between the two and important event’s such as Wiccan coming out to his family.

Although Hulkling and Wiccan were not Marvel’s first gay characters, they are the most prominent. Young Avengers have been heralded as groundbreaking in terms of youth culture and tackling important issues. After the events of the Children’s Crusade Wiccan fell into a deep depression. Seeing this depression Hulking proposed and the couple shared there first in comic kiss.

This kiss is groundbreaking in the Marvel comic industry as it finally shows an openly gay relationship without stereotypes. Historically when gay characters were included in comic books they were often marginalised and invisible. Further more, up until recently many comics had an adult advisory sticker on issues that featured LGBT individuals.

After this they both briefly retired from being superheroes and began to live with each other.

The end of television?

Since the introduction of television after the second world war the medium has grown beyond belief, taking over many of the older forms of entertainment such as radio. The rise of television has been the biggest in history. In 2009 approximately 74 % of the worlds population own a television. In recent times the rise of Internet Television and streaming services could mark the end of television as we know it. This can be attributed to a number of factors.

Internet television allows users much more control over what they much unlike the rigid schedules of television. If we take the RTE Player as an example a user can watch the soaps, Masterchef, and Love/Hate one after another. This service gives the audience at home more independence in choosing what they want to watch. As a result more people are expected to engage in this new digital media than stick with the outdated institute of television.

Along with the ability to choose what they want to watch audience are faced with a much larger variety of options with internet services. Any quick Google search will spit out dozens of links for popular tv shows and films. Viewers can literally watch and show or movie at their will. Television on the other hand, as mentioned above, abides by a strict viewing schedule.

Screen Shot 2014-10-22 at 09.20.53Going hand in hand with the aspect of variety is the ability to watch exclusive online shows. The streaming provider Netflix boasts many “Netflix Exclusives” (shows that air primarily on the site). These exclusives include ‘Orange is The New Black’, ‘House of Cards’, and ‘Hemlock Grove’. Recently Netflix and Marvel teamed up to produce a number of ‘Netflix Exclusives’ which include – Daredevil, Iron Fist, Jessica Jones, and Luke Cage. This marketing decision by Marvel marks the beginning of more internet based entertainment.

It shows that people are willing to invest in a HDMI cable and a Netflix subscription than wait for their favourite programmes to air on television, if they ever will. Since the digital revolution in the late 90’s and early 00’s the internet has been growing from strength to strength in terms of replacing outdated technologies. It seems now that television is quickly becoming one of these outdated technologies.
